Description
The painting is inspired by a poem penned by the great Maya Angelou- ‘Still I Rise’. This painting is a depiction of the sad reality of slavery, and the remnants of it seen in an ‘Emancipated’ world. However, like the poem, the painting acknowledges the hardships, but does not dwell on them- rather it builds on the hope and the resolve of the statement ‘Still I Rise’. The chant, the message, and the determination that resonates with all those who are subjected to social injustices – who are determined to rise above , never allowing their circumstances to reduce them. This work acknowledges the resilience, strength of character and the unwavering faith that ensures these injustices are overcome and equality is assured in the world of tomorrow.
