Description
This is a work I painted after reading Maya Angelou’s motivational poem “Still I Rise”. The painting depicts the same themes highlighted by the poem- injustice, perseverance, and the burden of legacy. The portrayal of the silent spectators, perhaps the ancestors, who patiently wait to see how their descendants have flourished in the freedom that has been earned. Angelou describes the weight of their expectations as “I am the dream and the hope of the slave”. It reflects the struggles along the journey to equality, as well as Angelou’s resolve to rise above, to rise despite, and to rise undeviatingly in the face of adversity. Though rooted in pain, the painting, much like the poem, celebrates determination of all those who face oppression, yet refuse to be reduced by their circumstances.
