In this beautiful spectral play of color, we find the Mother of Blues, Ma Rainey, born in 1886. Her face belies the deep-rooted emotion in the words and the soul that characterizes blues music. She seems to capture the historical essence of the genre- we see her feel the emotion of the field hollers, hymns, and work songs. The power of music seems to allow her to transcend across time, and almost experience the plight of her ancestors as they worked the fields. Her soulful expression is reminiscent of a certain dignified surrender- as she sings with the passion and fervor of a caged bird. A nod towards Angelou’s poem- we see the Blues Singer as the epitome of the caged bird- who has almost no power over her circumstance; and therefore her song becomes her rebellion. She sings with passion and zeal, as this is the only way she knows how to honor her legacy, her heritage.
