Description
A contemplative piece, illustrating the stronghold that our material desires have on our sense of self fulfilment. We are so deeply engrossed in the pursuit of worldly possessions and things, that the desire to own them slowly gains more and more power over us until it holds our happiness hostage. The painting depicts the materialistic human, almost strangled by his own desires. The painting invites us to reflect on our tendency to create conditions for happiness- especially those that derive value from monetary means. Despite this harsh truth, I encourage viewers to observe that this prison is self-imposed, as his own hand is the one holding the noose. Thus, the power remains ours to remove the noose around our necks, and free ourselves from worldly desires when we choose to do so.
